Louisville Girls Leadership was incorporated in the early 2000s to fill a void. At the time, girls in Louisville were an underserved population and there were almost no opportunities for teenage girls to participate in meaningful enrichment or personal development. designed as an opportunity for high school girls to become leaders within their community.

The origin story dates back to 1995 when a steering committee was formed to help fulfill the 1995 United Nations 4th World Conference on Women Bejing Platform for Action goal to “develop leadership and promote self-esteem in girls and young women”. This steering committee then created the first Louisville Girls Leadership Conference in 1997.
